One Day Beekeeping Short Course

Course Length: 4.5 hours includes 2 hours field time.

Learning Outcome: Learn about crop pollinators and honeybees with an introductory class to beekeeping.

Course Content:

  • Life cycle of honeybees.
  • How to do full hive inspections, pest control, and general hive examination.
  • How to harvest and extract honey.

Beekeeping Course – Level 1

Prerequisite: None. Come to learn about beekeeping and how to keep your own hive!

Course Length: 16 hours + 1 field day (To be determined based on applicants and Dr.Bee beekeeping team scheduling)

This course is designed for those who wish to learn about the basics of honeybee biology, hive products, and the fundamentals of beekeeping. Suitable for hobbyist beekeepers, backyard growers, or people looking get more involved in the beekeeping industry.

Learning Outcome: How to maintain your beehive and produce honey!

Course Content:

  • Bee biology and colony behaviour.
  • Hive management (spring, summer and fall management plus overwintering bees).
  • Building bee hives and frames, and use of hive equipment.
  • Hive manipulations.
  • Removing and extracting honey.
  • Pharmacological properties and uses of honey, pollen, propolis and royal jelly.
  • Bee nutrition and feeding hives.
  • Prevention, pests and disease control of bees.
  • Marketing hive products.
  • Plants and crop pollination.
  • Beekeeping by-laws in BC.
  • Organic beekeeping

What you can expect at the end of Beekeeping Level 1 – Students will have the option to start a few hives during the course. Upon completion, students will be able to manage up to 20 hives. A 20 hive operation has the potential to produce over 2000 lbs of honey plus various types of honeybee products such as royal jelly or beeswax.

Students who complete the course and are interested in furthering their knowledge of beekeeping will be provided with further training and may be offered a career in beekeeping. Currently there is a high demand for skilled beekeepers in Canada.

Beekeeping Course – Level 2

Prerequisite: Beekeepers who complete level 1 or have minimum 2 years beekeeping experience.

Course Length: 8 hours + 1 field day (To be determined based on applicants and Dr.Bee beekeeping team scheduling)

This course is suitable for sideline beekeepers.

Course content covers:

  • Swarm control and hive splitting.
  • 2 queen system colonies.
  • Queen bee rearing.
  • Hive re-Queening.
  • Processing of hive products (bee venom, pollen, propolis and royal jelly).
  • Comb honey production.

Class times: 9:30 am to 5:30 pm
Cost: $99 + Tax

Beekeeping Course – Level 3

Prerequisite: Beekeeping course level 1 and 2 or have 5 years of beekeeping experience.

Course Length: 10 hours + 1 field day (To be determined based on number of applicants)

This course is suitable for sideline or commercial beekeepers.

Course content covers:

  • Queen Selection and breeding program.
  • Certification of your honey house.

Class times: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm
Cost: $109 + Tax
