What Propolis Actually Is (and Where It Comes From)
Propolis doesn't get made in a factory. It's made by bees — thousands of them, each flying out from the hive to find resin weeping from a poplar bud or a wound in a pine's bark, then carrying it home and working it, mouth to mouth, with a little wax and a little of their own enzymes, until it becomes something else entirely. Not tree resin anymore, and not honey either.
Beekeepers have long called it "bee glue." The more formal name, propolis, comes from the Greek pro ("in defense of") and polis ("city") — a fitting name for what it actually does. [1]
Its job in the hive
A beehive doesn't have walls the way a house does. It has whatever the bees can build and seal, and propolis is most of the sealing. It gets pressed into cracks in the woodwork, painted over interior walls, layered at the entrance where the outside world tries to get in. If something dies inside the hive — a mouse, a beetle, anything too large for the bees to remove — propolis goes over that too, sealing it in place rather than letting it decay inside the colony.
It's not a glamorous job. It's a structural one: keep the outside out.
A substance humans noticed a long time ago
Historical records place human use of propolis at least as far back as ancient Egypt, where it's believed to have been used alongside other resins in the mummification process, and other early civilizations used it for cleaning and dressing wounds.[2] None of them had a lab — they simply noticed that the substance keeping a hive intact seemed useful outside the hive as well, and kept using it.
Propolis isn't a single, uniform compound. No two batches are quite the same, since it's built from whatever resin was locally available that season and gathered by whichever bees happened to collect it. A rough breakdown — resins, waxes, essential oils, and pollen, in that order of abundance — gets repeated across a lot of propolis literature, but it's worth being upfront that the exact figures behind that breakdown trace back to sources that are difficult to verify, and at least one detailed review has challenged how reliable they actually are. [3] What's better established is that propolis contains several hundred distinct compounds, with flavonoids as the most studied group. [4]
How people use it today
Propolis is generally used the way a daily vitamin is — as a consistent, small part of a routine, not something reached for only in a moment of need. That mirrors its role in the hive: not an emergency measure, but a constant, quiet layer that's simply always there.
